Capture6 Selected as a Qualified Team in the $119 Million XPRIZE Water Scarcity Competition

September 22, 2025

Capture6 is proud to announce that it has been selected as a Qualified Team in the XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition sponsored by the Mohammed bin Zayed Water Initiative — a $119 million, multi-year global challenge aimed at revolutionizing access to clean water by creating reliable, affordable, and sustainable seawater desalination systems.

As the global climate crisis intensifies, the need for scalable, economically viable water recovery has never been greater. Water-stressed regions are turning increasingly to desalination, an industry that can solve freshwater scarcity. Yet, at the same time disposal of brine is both costly and environmentally damaging.

Capture6 is implementing a systems-level approach to brine disposal that incorporates carbon removal through industrial synergies. By embedding carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology within existing industrial desalination facilities, Capture6 generates decarbonization as a secondary benefit of addressing pressing issues like mounting freshwater scarcity and costly brine disposal.

This announcement represents the first technical milestone and formaldownselection of the competition. Capture6 has passed a rigorous judging process evaluating the merit and feasibility of our proposed approaches, demonstrating strong potential to develop solutions capable of meeting the competition’s high technical and operational standards.

This milestone underscores the accelerating push toward decentralized, adaptive, and resource-efficient desalination systems that can be deployed in water-stressed regions worldwide. By advancing into the Qualified Teams cohort, Capture6 is now positioned to compete in the official race toward scalable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective desalination systems.

“At Capture6, we see water as both a human right and a climate solution,” said Ethan Cohen-Cole, Capture6 CEO. “Our work ensures that every drop of clean water produced also contributes to reducing atmospheric carbon, tackling two global crises simultaneously.”

About Capture6

Capture6 is a global water recovery company leveraging its technology to support climate resilience. The company develops and commercializes highly scalable approaches to recover freshwater from industrial brine, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in the process. Capture6 is pioneering an approach that can be deployed today by repurposing existing industrial-scale technologies. When coupled with desalination facilities, Capture6 can recover over 50% of freshwater from desalination waste brine for drinking and industrial purposes in the process of removing CO₂. This creates a scalable and financially attractive synergy between water security and decarbonization. Learn more at capture6.com
